Gadgets A gadget is a small technological object (such as a device or an appliance) that has a particular function. Gadgets are invariably considered to be more unusually or cleverly designed than normal technology at the time of their invention. Gadgets are sometimes also referred to as gizmos. The origins of the word "gadget" trace back to the 1800s. According to the Oxford English Dictionary, there is anecdotal evidence for the use of "gadget" as a placeholder name for a technical item whose precise name one can't remember since the 1850s; with Robert Brown's 1886 book Spunyarn and Spindrift, A sailor boy's log of a voyage out and home in a China tea-clipper containing the earliest known usage in print. The etymology of the word is disputed. A widely circulated story holds that the word gadget was "invented" when Gaget, Gauthier & Cie, the company behind the casting of the Statue of Liberty (1886), made a small-scale version of the monument and named it after their firm. Problem with most traditional wired floodlights is that they must be “wired” and that means drilling holes in the walls of your home and that can sometimes be bad (if you install it wrong). Besides that, you might actually spend more money as for most motion-sensing wired floodlights are in the $100-200 range. But why bother with all that when you can get these Wireless Motion-Sensing LED floodlights (that run on three D batteries for a year) and install them everywhere around your house without drilling holes? These wireless LED floodlights also are bright as they run on batteries and only turns on at night. I’ve also done my research (not just bs-ing here), there are also solar wireless LED floodlights out there. Most solar LED lights in general are not recommended for floodlights as solar panels are still way too expensive in proportion to the amount of power they generate. Unless you want to install a full-size solar panels on your roof, solar LED floodlights are simply not cost effective at this point. This might change in 2-3 years but I’ve already spent $300 on some solar LED floodlights at my local Home Depot, only to return them all … Continue reading →This post Affordable Wireless Motion-Sensing LED Floodlight! was originally from zedomax.com

If only we could see Wi-Fi Imagine a world where you could actually see wireless signals, it would be so much easier to log into a network, as you would be able to see the strongest point is. However just to make the point that Wi-Fi is all around us, three designers from Scandinavia had the idea to visualise just what these Wi-Fi signals would look like in the real world. To show just how cool this would be, Timo Arnall, Jørn Knutsen and Einar Sneve Martinussen created used four metre long tubes with eighty LED’s built into them. the more lights showing up the better the Wi-Fi signal is, it is very much like those t shirts that we shown before. The process was demonstrated in Oslo, Norway to great effect as the images show. Two way Wi-Fi is faster It stands to reason that you were able to produce two way communications over the same wireless frequency that would effectively double the connection speed, allowing faster mobile and Wi-Fi network speeds. It sounds a lot easier than it actually is; after all, if it were that simple then we would be experiencing this super wireless networking already. However, step up Stamford University, there is a research team here who believe that they may have the answer to super fast wireless broadband, as they claim to have discovered a way to create two communications over a wireless connection. This is not just an idea; it is actually taking the wireless rule book, ripping it up and starting from scratch, because two way Wi-Fi could take this way of connecting to the internet to another level. Obviously, this research is at an early stage and as such, we wait for more information! Router Hack ? How to Connect a Mifi Hotspot Device into a Router/Wired Network! One of our readers asked me if there was a way to connect a MiFi hotspot device such as Verizon’s MiFi or Sprint’s 4G Overdrive into a wired network/router. I googled it and found that you can do it with DD-WRT. I probably wouldn’t do that if you do a lot of downloading such as Bittorrent as ISP will get mad at you if you over-use the device. (and could terminate your contract) They are really made for travel and portability, not for full-time computing. I think so, but you are free to check out what the limits are by downloading a bunch of pron and leaving us the details below in the comments section. However, this could be a great solution to many of you out there who use internet for light web browsing like my parents and connect multiple devices. This tip might not be helpful for many but for those of you like me who live in areas populated enough to have good verizon coverage but not enough to have decent Cable or DSL internet this may be a solution for you. So far we have connected 2 of these for customers just outside of the Danville, … Continue reading →This post Router Hack – How to Connect a Mifi Hotspot Device into a Router/Wired Network! was originally from zedomax.com
Hulu on Sony Dash Owners of the Sony Dash, who also happen to be subscribers of Hulu Plus, will now be able to view all of their favourite TV shows and movies from the device. For anyone that has no idea what the Sony Dash is, here is a quick refresher! The device is basically an internet viewer that connects to the home or office wireless network, there are already over a thousand apps for the user to choose from. There is no need to be tethered to a computer as this touch screen device does it all and more now that Hulu is available on it. This looks like a positive attempt from Sony to bring the Dash in front of more people, however the system is going to cost around $200 and then there is the Hulu Plus with a $10 per month subscription, somehow it no longer looks as exciting as it did at the beginning. WiFi Robin ? Standalone WEP Cracking Device! WEP cracking is illegal and I don’t recommend doing that to get free WiFi but for those of you who might need to crack WEP for other purposes, here’s a cool new device on the market called WiFiRobin, a standalone WEP cracking device. Now, how is better than running your Aircrack on Ubuntu linux? Well, running Aircrack on linux or anything else for that matter involves a whole lot of things including the fact that your wifi card must be supported. The WiFi Robin keeps things simple as it’s a standalone device and you don’t need to know a whole lot of code to crack WEP. On top of that, the range of the WiFi Robin is much higher than a typical wifi card, up to 2KM. I have seen a lot of wifi networks are hard to crack because you are not getting such a great signal in the first place but this WiFiRobin will take care of that. WiFi Decoder is a powerful 1000 MW Long Range USB WiFi Adapter that can access WiFi connections up to 2 km away! Verizon Launching 4G LTE at CTIA! So, today will be a big day for Verizon, who will be launching 4G LTE right here at CTIA around 11:30AM. From what we know so far, Verizon will probably launch 4G LTE in 30 cities by end of 2010 and hopefully nationwide by late next year. I had the pleasure of attending Verizon’s private party last night (thanks again to folks at Verizon and great hospitality by Don at B Bars and Restaurant in SF) and actually got to talk to an insider at CDMA development group, who manages the standards of CDMA technology and 3G. I won’t mention his name but the guy ad CDMA development group was saying that both Sprint’s WiMax, Verizon’s 4G LTE were not really “4G” but really a marketing hype to get people on-board network a bit faster than 3G. It seemed like current so-called “4G” technology is actually a bit more like 3.5G. Instead, he told me they are already working on true 4G technology called LTE Advanced. (That’s just the code name right now but it will be called something else.) LTE and WiMax are both two different technologies and probably will have its own “advanced” version in the next couple … Continue reading →This post Verizon Launching 4G LTE at CTIA! was originally from zedomax.com

Free Wi-Fi in NYC parks We like anything that?s free, but free Wi-Fi is always something to be careful with as this is not the Parks Department providing this service, it?s a carrier and in this case its Time Warner and Cablevision. It?s part of a $10 million deal that allows users of Wi-Fi enabled equipment free internet access for thirty minutes a month, that sounds like a minute day, which would be enough time for me to press the mail button on my iPhone and download all of my messages twice a day. However, it is not that easy, the thirty minutes have to be taken in three ten minute chunks, after which a charge of 99 cents a day will apply. So maybe that is not so cool after all, as there are other places where Wi-Fi is free. Of course, it would seem that customers of Time Warner and Cablevision will be getting free Wi-Fi 24/7. WiFi Hack ? How to Make a DIY WiFi Datalogger (Snooper!) Here’s an interesting device that can log all the data off a wifi network. Of course, you can probably use a PC to do the same thing but this one is portable and can act as a spy’s tool. I bet FBI and CIA are already using something like this. This could be a great way to track down if your wife’s cheating on you. Of course, let’s not hope you are at that point ever. This Instructable shows how to make a datalogger from an Arduino and datalogger shield connected to a TelosB wireless sensor board and a battery that is large, but not wheelbarrow large. Your data goes onto a SD memory card on the datalogger for pickup later (whenever you have to change the batteries on all the wireless radios in your network, for example). via instructables This post WiFi Hack – How to Make a DIY WiFi Datalogger (Snooper!) was originally from zedomax.comThis post WiFi Hack – How to Make a DIY WiFi Datalogger (Snooper!) was originally from zedomax.com
DIY Wind-Turbine WiFi Repeater! Have two locations you want to connect via WiFi signals but you don’t want to spend thousands on WiFi equipment? Here’s a great idea, make a DIY wind-turbine wifi repeater that uses pair of Linksys WRT54G routers with DD-WRT firmware on it (which allows you to turn your router into a repeater easily) and connect two routers .33 miles away. The power meter works by reading the amount of current flowing into the batteries from the turbine on a continuous basis. This is achieved using a Hall-Effect current sensor that can read up to 30A, which is much more than what the turbine is capable of. We utilized two Linksys WRT54G routers running the DD-WRT firmware to achieve Internet connectivity. One router was located on the second floor of an RIT building .33 miles away from the communication node. The router in the office was connected to the Internet and used a 8dBi external omni directional antenna to broadcast the signal. The communication node?s router used a 19dBi parabolic directional antenna pointed at the router in the building via hackedgadgets, Project Page This post DIY Wind-Turbine WiFi Repeater! was originally from zedomax.comThis post DIY Wind-Turbine WiFi Repeater! was originally from zedomax.com
Droid X Mobile Hotspot ? ?Incredible!? Right now, I am blogging this blog post from my parent’s house where the wifi signal is horrible to my favorite part of the house where I like to work. Because the DSL is SOOO SLOW here (because it’s AT&T), I decided to give the Droid X a try and give my parents and myself a faster internet access. To my surprise, Droid X Mobile Hotspot does “incredible”, I mean incredible like the mobile hotspot gives stronger signals than the DD-WRT Linksys router I have set up at the house. And believe me, I know how to hack a Linksys router to make it perform but Droid X seems to have outdone it. I have done the same tests with my other smartphones but Droid X seems to have a stronger signal for its mobile hotspot capabilities. My dad also has a Verizon Mifi Mobile Hotspot device, Droid X outdid that too by far. Unbelievable! Whatever the case, if you have been carrying a broadband USB dongle or MiFi for your business trips, it’s time to get rid of all of them and get a Droid X. There?s always a ?dead spot? on the other side of my parents … Continue reading →This post Droid X Mobile Hotspot – “Incredible!” was originally from zedomax.com
